Last night at 6:30 PM, a 70 year old woman was putting air in her tire at a gas station at 2920 CV Boulevard when 30-year old Matthew Nylander approached, demanding the keys to her car and her purse.

The victim refused and Nylander struck the 70-year old woman with a metal pipe several times. Another 63-year old male nearby intervened and was also struck with the metal pipe. Following the attack, the suspect fled on foot without any victim property and was followed on foot by another reporting party.

A responding ACSO deputy caught up with Nylander on San Miguel Avenue and had to tase the him after Nylander brandished the same pipe in a threatening manner. Nylander faces a number of charges, including attempted robbery, attempted car jacking, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, felony assault with serious injury and resisting arrest.

The 70-year old victim suffered a broken cheek bone, broken jaw and a laceration to the back of her head that required multiple staples. The 63-year old male that heroically intervened suffered a broken finger, a broken shoulder and a less severe laceration to his head.
